International School Visits
If you’re organising international school visits across Bristol, talk to us about a bespoke visit to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge & Museum.
There are lots of ways to experience the bridge, including guided tours, workshops, and exploring at your own pace. Please reach out with your requirements and we’ll be happy to recommend a custom itinerary for your group, including out-of-hours visits.*
*Pre-booking for all visits is essential. If you do not pre-book we will not be able to provide a tour, and we may not be able to accommodate your group in the Museum.
Visiting Opportunities:
Clifton Suspension Bridge Tour (45 mins – 1 hour) – A tour of the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge with one of our Learning Facilitators. Beginning in Clifton, you’ll learn all about how Brunel’s first bridge was almost never built, with many interesting stories along the way and a range of props and images to engage pupils.
Self-Guided Tour (30 mins – 2 hours) – Walk across the bridge at your own pace and visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge Museum. The bridge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the Museum is open daily 10:00-17:00.
We recommend the views from the top of Observatory Hill (near Clifton Observatory) and Sion Hill (near the Avon Gorge Hotel). Both are accessed via paved footpaths (sloped, without steps).
Education Workshops (1 hour) – As part of our Education Programme, pupils have the opportunity to handle postcards from our archives, build their own bridge using a range of different resources, and delve into the role of being the Bridge Master by deciding maintenance priorities and managing a budget.
Led by our Learning Facilitators, our workshops are suitable for all ages. You can find a breakdown of our workshops here.
Underground Vaults Visit – Relaxed, Interactive, Educational (1 hour) – Partially guided tour of the Clifton Suspension Bridge’s Underground Vaults. You can explore the chambers at your own pace.
Put on a hard hat, climb down the ladder and explore two of these unique chambers for yourself. This tour comes with an illustrated map. You will be accompanied by a White-Badge Certified Learning Facilitator. There will be plenty of time to take photographs and ask any questions you might have to our friendly and knowledgeable guides.
Minimum age 7+.
Accessibility:
The bridge and Museum are both accessible to those using mobility aids. There are also exhibition guides in Braille and large print. The Hard Hat Tour requires going up and down a ladder.
We also have short history resources in the following languages:
Afrikaans, Cantonese, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Urdu and Welsh.
