Your Commute
If you're crossing the bridge on your way to work or school, or are on your way to an important appointment, here's what to expect during the works. We're planning to keep the bridge open for traffic and pedestrians throughout this project, and to minimise disruption wherever possible by keeping the carriageway clear during busy commuter periods.
At least one footway will be open for pedestrians throughout the course of the works. As people will be be crossing in both directions, please be aware that narrow areas may become congested during busy periods. We ask that all pedestrians cross with consideration for other users and cyclists dismount if using the footways.
The Trust will keep the number of bridge closures during the project to a minimum and will notify the public of these at least two weeks in advance. Diversions will be in place. To receive advance notifications, please subscribe to our e-newsletter and select ‘Planned Maintenance’ from the preferences page.
We aim to keep traffic moving across the bridge throughout the project. If you’re driving across the bridge, please plan your journey with plenty of time to cross as there may be lane closures along the span of the bridge. This is to protect the painting team, who will be working overhead. When necessary, Stop/Go boards will be employed to allow traffic to continue flowing in both directions.
There will be a full closure of the bridge to all traffic and pedestrians during the Bristol Ballon Fiesta. During the Nightglow events, the bridge will be closed from 6pm until midnight. As this time will be used for essential refurbishment works, it will not be possible to allow access to the bridge any earlier than midnight. Please plan your journey carefully!
