How was the Avon Gorge formed? On this tour, we’ll hear two stories about it’s creation. One begins 360 million years ago at the bottom of a prehistoric sea – and the other is a tale of two giants and their quest to impress a goddess.
In this tour, pupils will learn about:
- The mythical story of the two giants who formed the gorge.
- The scientific story of how the gorge was formed.
- What makes the gorge a special place (Site of Special Scientific Interest)
- What unusual animals and plants live in the avon gorge.
Suitable for: KS1, KS2
Group size: Up to 25 pupils
Duration: 45 minutes – 1 hour

Additional information
This tour does require all participants to cross the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The tour will start on the Clifton side of the bridge and finish at the Museum.
If your group is larger than 25, we will split into smaller groups and start at staggered points.
We will give the group health and safety instructions about crossing the bridge in advance.
