Being the Bridge Master is an important job. In this workshop, you’ll be asked to take on the role of Bridge Master and become responsible for the maintenance of the bridge. You’ll be presented with several challenges involving budgeting and weighing up the pros and cons of projects for all stakeholders. This workshop is an excellent introduction to the operational management of the bridge and a good opportunity for STEM learning.
In this workshop, pupils will:
- Learn about different types of engineering careers and the role of the Bridge master at the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
- Complete a scenario-based task with several challenges involving budgeting and weighing up the pros and cons of projects for all stakeholders.
- In groups, pupils will decide on a maintenance plan for the year and work out the cost.
- At the end of the workshop, the groups will present to the whole group what they decided.
Suitable for: KS2, KS3, KS4
Group size: Up to 20 pupils
Duration: 1 hour
Curriculum area: Engineering, Science, and Maths.
Additional information
The pupils will be split into 4 smaller groups of up to 5 per group.
Each group will require support from at least one adult—recommended ratio: one adult for every five children.
