As part of Bristol Walkfest’s 2020 digital offer, tour guide Gordon Young created a series of short films exploring the landscape from each of the bridge’s four abutment viewpoints. Here’s the complete set, allowing you to go on your own virtual tour of the Clifton Suspension Bridge!
The North-West Abutment: We begin our journey across the bridge, travelling from the Museum in Leigh Woods.
The North-East Abutment: We cross the bridge to enjoy the views from the North East abutment (Clifton), and look out to study the flora growing on the steep rock faces.
The South-East Abutment: We’ve now made our way to the south-east abutment, close to the Avon Gorge Hotel. We take a look at the buildings of Sion Hill and Windsor Terrace.
The South-West Abutment: We’ve reached our final viewpoint – the South West Abutment. We’re standing on top of Brunel’s great vaulted chambers inside the large red sandstone abutment. From this point, we can explore the buildings of Clifton and Hotwells and look down toward the Portway and Cumberland Basin where we explore transport, past and present.
