The Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Wednesday 29th October 2025 to carry out essential maintenance works.
Vital monitoring equipment which protects the historic structure from overloading by overweight vehicles is being overhauled, and a new monitoring system installed. The weigh beams, located at each approach the bridge ensure that vehicles weighing over 4 tonnes do not cross.
To enable these essential works to be carried out, the bridge will be closed to traffic and cyclists for one day, during off-peak hours, from 9.30am to 3.30pm on 29th October 2025. A diversion route will be signed, using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.
Bridge Master, Trish Johnson, said “We will be conducting this work during off peak times to ensure as little disruption to users as possible. This work is a vital part of keeping the bridge well maintained and operating for many years to come. Taziker, our main Contractor, will also take advantage of this closure to carry out further painting works from the roadside, and we will also carry out essential maintenance required at the toll barriers.
“During these bridge closures pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge, but cycling will be prohibited. Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, but as only one narrow footway will be open, cyclists are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible.
“As all our maintenance activities are funded entirely by bridge tolls, Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust wishes to thank users for supporting the preservation of this famous landmark, and apologise for the inconvenience which these closures will cause. We hope that by keeping the road open during rush hour we will minimise the disruption caused.”
Traffic following the official signed diversion routes from the bridge during these times will be exempt from Bristol City Council’s Clean Air Zone.
