This workshop combines historical exploration, visual analysis, and hands-on writing; it provides pupils with a unique and immersive learning experience on the history of postcards, fostering an appreciation for this traditional form of communication.

In this workshop, pupils will:

• Learn about the history of postcards and how communication has changed over time.
• Learn about the role of the archivist at a museum.
• Put on archival gloves and then handle and investigate postcards from our collection using prompts.
• Drawing inspiration from the postcards’ messages and images, they will write and design their own postcards.

Suitable for: KS1, lower KS2
Group size: Up to 20 pupils
Duration: 1 hour
Curriculum area: English, History, Art and Design.

Additional information
The pupils will be split into 4 smaller groups of up to 5 per group. Each group will require support from at least one adult—recommended ratio: one adult for every five children.

You are welcome to take photographs throughout your visit. We’d love you to share pictures of your school trip with us on social media.
